Owyhee Canyonlands Road Trip 2016: Part 2

The second half of our Memorial Day road trip had us leaving the deserts of southeastern Oregon and heading the mountains of Eastern Oregon. Given the late spring conditions, we knew that the snow level for most of the mountain ranges in the area, including the Elkhorns, would still be fairly high, but that the upper reaches of the terrain would still be covered in snow. Therefore, we would scout out what we could, but stick to the lower elevations and explore the North Fork of the John Day Wilderness. I also had to get a long training run in so the N.F. John Day River trail would provide ample training ground for me.

One the way to our campground on the west side of the Elkhorns, we stopped in Sumpter, OR to see the historic Sumpter Valley Dredge. The area has a rich mining history so it was cool to see all the old artifacts.

The start of an 18 mile training run through the North Fork of the John Day Wilderness.

Old mining claims
The historic Bigfoot Hilton, emergency shelter.

Every good run should have a refreshing water crossing.

After my run, Kerrie and I headed back into the Wilderness to explore some of the old structures.

Blue Heaven Emergency Shelter. This one was actually in really good shape and worthy of an emergency shelter.

We had some dinner guests.
We took the scenic way home on the way to check out Cottonwood Canyon State Park.

More unsuccessful fishing on the John Day river. The swimming was quite nice though.
